H&S Manufacturing was contacted by a manufacturer of test and measurement equipment for fabrication of an aluminum exhaust side shield. This complex project required a CNC milled component that was fitted with a gasket to shield electronics from electromagnetic interference.

The client provided us with 2D CAD drawings, which we derived a 3D model from using Creo Parametric engineering software. The shield was made from 6061-T6 aluminum and milled to 6.360" x 3.750" x .383" utilizing our Leadwell V40iT 5-axis vertical machining center. A clear chromate coating was applied to the aluminum per ASTM B449-93 standards; the class 3 coating retards corrosion, acts as a base for the gasketing material, and has low electrical contact impedance.

To produce the extensive layout of the gasket, liquid gasket material was dispensed using a Nordson EFD industrial dispensing robot model # JR 2053N. This form in place process applied a bead of SNN60RXP Laird gasket material to the aluminum substrate forming a precise gasket.

Our quality program utilized in-process dimensional and visual inspections. Fulfilling all customer requirements, we held milling tolerances to ±.001" and gasket tolerances to ± .003" on bead width and ±.005" on location.
