This FAQ highlights our most common customer questions about capabilities, materials, tolerances, certifications, and value-added services.
Capabilities & Manufacturing Expertise
What’s the difference between sheet metal fabrication and CNC machining?
Sheet metal fabrication is a formative process that shapes thin metal sheets through processes such as cutting, bending, punching, or stamping. It is well-suited for enclosures, brackets, panels, and other parts where strength and versatility are a top priority.
CNC machining is a subtractive process that begins with a solid block or workpiece and uses computer-controlled cutting tools to remove material. This approach is ideal for producing parts with intricate details, complex geometries, and tight tolerances.
What materials do you work with?
The materials used depend on the needs of the application, such as weight reduction, corrosion resistance, or added strength.
Common materials we work with for sheet metal fabrication include:
- Aluminum
- Cold rolled steel
- Hot rolled steel
- Stainless steel
- Brass
- Copper
- Galvanized steel
Common materials we work with for CNC machining include:
- Aluminum
- Brass
- Cold rolled steel
- Hot rolled steel
- Stainless steel
- Copper
- Galvanized steel
- Plastics
- Reinforced epoxy (FR4)
How precise are your tolerances?
H&S maintains some of the industry’s tightest tolerances to ensure part accuracy:
- Sheet metal fabrication: bend (±.005 inches), hole-to-hole (±.005 inches), and other feature-specific tolerances
- CNC machining: ±.001 inches (±.0254 mm)
Each part is produced to match your exact design specifications.
Can you handle both prototypes and production runs?
Yes. Our equipment and processes are built for scalability. We support projects of all sizes, from a single prototype to high-volume production runs. Typical lead times are:
- Sheet metal fabrication: about 4 weeks
- CNC machining: about 6 weeks
